Become a Rider: 5 Steps
We've created a simplified 5-step guide to help you feel confident on your journey to becoming a rider.
First things first, before you can legally ride a motorcycle or moped on the road, you must:
be over 16 years of age to ride a moped
be over 17 years of age to ride a light motorcycle
be over 18 years of age to ride a heavy motorcycle
Go to your Parish Hall and apply for a provisional licence for the category you require:
moped (P)
light motorcycle (A1)
heavy motorcycle (A) - if you’re applying for this licence, you must have held a full licence for a light motorcycle for at least 12 months.
You’ll need:
to complete an application form
one passport sized colour photograph
the £20 licence fee
Your provisional licence will not be valid -enabling you to ride on the road - until you have completed your CBT course.
Your provisional licence will expire after six months from the date of issue, and within that time you will need to:
take your motorcycle theory test
complete your CBT course
attempt a driving test - or you may not be able to renew your provisional license for one year
As the Jersey School of Motorcycling says, ‘it’s a good idea to take your motorcycle theory test before your CBT course, but at the moment it’s not compulsory.
Later in the year, however, the law will be changing so that the theory test will have to be passed with DVS before you can take your CBT course.’
You’ll need to complete your motorcycle theory test within the validity of your provisional license (6 months from the date of issue) and before applying for your practical driving test.
The CBT course is legally required for anyone wishing to ride a motorcycle or moped on public roads. It’s not an exam, it’s a course of training you are required to complete satisfactorily.
The course is around 7 hours long and is conducted at weekends by the Jersey School of Motorcycling, who are approved by DVS as the sole provider of CBT in Jersey.
You will learn all the basics, allowing you to ride safely on the road. Steering around cones, driving slowly, braking and learning about your bike, to a short theory test then heading out on the road for a couple of hours.

When you have your provisional licence and you’ve completed the CBT course, you’re able to ride on the road 🙌 Now, if you haven’t already, it’s time to take your theory test.
When riding on the road, make sure you have:
your provisional licence
your CBT Certificate
a valid insurance disc displayed on the vehicle
an 'L' learner plate integrally displayed as part of the rear number plate
fully operational direction indicators
a brake light that operates with the front brake and the rear brake
an approved crash helmet
no one on the back!
You should also wear bright protective clothing, such as gloves, boots and a motorcycle jacket.
You’re ready to take your practical driving test.
The test can be booked in person at DVS, or online.
You will need:
your valid Jersey provisional licence
your theory test pass certificate
your CBT certificate (if required)
the correct fee (£53 for heavy motor cycle or £46 for light motor cycle or moped)
On the day of your test, you will need:
to arrive 15 minutes early
your valid Jersey provisional licence
your theory test pass certificate
your CBT certificate (if required)
your valid certificate of insurance or cover note
(if the bike does not belong to you) a letter of permission, signed by the owner, to use the bike for the purpose of the test
Your motorcycle will need to:
be in a roadworthy condition
display a valid insurance disk
have an 'L' learner plate integrally displayed as part of the rear number plate
